Bairiki Tarawa, 22nd January, 2020--- The Government of Kiribati has received an assortment of donations from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) donor partners in the form of disaster supplies kits.

The handing over ceremony took place on Wednesday morning the 20th of January, 2020 at the Kiribati Meteorological Services (KMS) Office in Betio.

The donations were made by the Republic of Japan along with the Republic of Russia through the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme. These donations were made in response to the recent Tropical cyclone Sarai in late 2019 and early 2020 whose impacts affected the islands of Tabiteuea North, Onotoa, Beru, Nikunau, Tamana and Arorae.

The donations from the Republic of Russia contained solar kits for affected private households on the six affected islands along with power tools such as chain-saw, wheelbarrow, shovels, hammer, bush knife and file and axe which are to be kept by the Island Councils on the affected islands to strengthen disaster preparedness and response.

Furthermore, the Republic of Japan has provided tsunami kits for schools which will be distributed to selected schools on pilot islands in Kiribati for strengthening school preparedness in tsunamis.

The disaster supplies kits were received by the Deputy Secretary of the Office of te Beretitenti alongside a representative from MIA and will be distributed to the affected private households in the 6 affected Islands and selected schools by the Disaster Risk Management Unit (NDMO) with support from UNDP representative in Kiribati, MIA and MOE.

During his speech, Deputy Secretary for the Office of Te Beretitenti, Mr. Ruui Tabutoa whose office facilitated the handing over of the donations said; “The Kiribati Government cannot stress enough the significance and value of UNDP and its donor partner’s support to the communities, whose lives and livelihoods have been severely affected. The items would not only help families rebuild their lives but more importantly, would equip them with tools to better respond to impacts of future natural disasters. “

The UNDP alongside its donor partners continues to play an important part in Kiribati’s national development through its various programmes of assistance and support and the Government of Kiribati looks forward to continue this close partnership with UNDP in the years ahead.
