Government has decided to further extend the curfew for another two more weeks from Friday 18th of March 2022 to Friday 1st of April 2022 or may be longer should the need arise, with similar measures applied in the curfew orders within the last two weeks. The only change is that the curfew time have been relaxed for South Tarawa, Betio, Buota and Butaritari which now commence from 8pm in the evening until 5am in the morning the following day. Shops will close for business at 7pm in the evening to allow time for people to return to their homes.

The curfew order for North Tarawa, Maiana, Abaiang, Marakei, Abemama, Aranuka and Makin for the last two weeks will remain the same and will continue to be effective up to 1st April, 2022.

As the safety of the public is paramount, the Government continues to impose a curfew to reduce the spread of the virus in the community and to have more time to prepare before another second wave, anticipated to happen three months since the first outbreak of COVID-19 in January this year as advised by AUSMAT, the Australian Medical Team.

In light of this, the Government appeals to the general public to strictly comply with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) together with measures applied under the curfew order. The mandatory measures are wearing of face masks, 2 metres social distancing and washing of hands. Those who have reached 60 years and above must take their booster doses at the nearby clinics 5 months after receiving their second dose. Roaming about during curfew hours is strictly prohibited and gatherings should not be more than 20 persons.

The Government through the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is developing a Standard Operational Procedure to ensure that travels between South Tarawa, Betio and islands free from COVID-19 can commence soon.
